The city is among the oldest European settlements in South America and among the most important ports on the Firme Earth since colonial times. It also has a colonial structure that makes it charming for visitors.

Santa Marta is located on the Colombian Caribbean coast. Its beaches and beautiful views marveled at the first Spanish colonizers who founded in this dream site a city they called Santa Marta. Blinded by American gold, they saw in the local crafts of indigenous people .

Santa Marta is a starting point for several destinations:

El Rodadero is a beach-side village just outside the city's perimeter of Santa Marta, with its white sand and variety in restaurants and bars. It is the favorite place for national tourists to spend their holidays in Santa Marta. From the city of Santa Marta, you can easily get there by taxi (8,000 pesos or 5 USD) or by bouseta (1,200 pesos or 70 cents).

Taganga is a fishing village surrounded by several beautiful beaches and some very congested on weekends. It has backpackers or backpackers type hotel offer and the owners of most hostels are foreigners (Germany, Spain, France) who decided to stay.

When you stay you can consult diving lessons from the basic level to advanced certified diving classes.

To get to Taganga, you can take a taxi from Santa Marta (just like the Rodadero) and take a day trip to get to know the wonderful Playa Grande, where you can get there on foot or by boat (3000 pesos/2 USD), in the center of the city there are buses that take the journey (20 minutes) to (1200 pesos/6 cent. USD)

Tayrona Park: When you are in Santa Marta, don't forget to visit Tayrona Park, which is a magical place full of charm and beautiful things to know. At the Rodadero or the travel agencies can offer them plans with this activity, if they like walking there they can do it, or if on the contrary they just want to relax they can go by car or bus and then rest and camp any night they want. I really advise you to visit him...besides the traditional tours to the beaches, Pueblito and Playa Cristal now there are also tours and trekings to the less well known beaches of Tayrona park such as Cinto and Chengue, and tours to know the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the beaches of Tayrona Park in one day[1].

To go to Tayrona Park you must take a taxi (60,000 pesos from Santa Marta or bus (5,000 pesos per person), upon arrival at the park you charge a fee for entering it and this ticket for nationals and foreigners. once inside the park you have to walk a lot so it is advisable to hire donkey transport if you have a lot of luggage.

The park has 8 beaches - 2 of which are the most spectacular ones not suitable for swimming because of the violence of the waves, the others are used for camping on the beach.

Tayrona Park is part of the Lost City[2], in the middle of the Sierra Nevada you can find several indigenous villages and the ruins of an old city, to go there you must coordinate from Santa Marta- for more information visit this link http://www.presidencia.gov.co/parques/espanol/tayrona.htm

Eat

As is common throughout the Caribbean region of Colombia are fish and seafood, carimanolas, egg arepas, cassava, yams and cooked. For example, in Taganga, a small fishing village, you can find several restaurants that offer dishes based on delicious and exotic fruits of the sea. Given these conditions, the food that an outsider could find would be dishes based on sea fruits, coconut rice, egg arepa, patacón, yams, clean buns, or with excellent meat from the Sabana de Bolívar. In addition, the daily food of the samarium is based on preparations made with: "Green Guineo" (unripened banana) is this cooked to make the popular guineo pachangao or cayeye, or fried in slices, potatoes and any of its variants; cassava cooked with cheese and butter or prepared in carimanolas; rice and fish soups; or as in the rest of the country, corn flour is used to make arepas, empanadas and buns.

El Españolete, 13th Street No. 2 - 45, just behind the famous Juan Valdez Café del Parque. He is run by Toni from Spain and his wife, who care a lot about the well-being of their clients and making them feel at home. They offer delicious, original Spanish food of all types and tapas: callos a la madrileña, ali oli, omelet spanish, and its specialty is authentic Valencian paella and grilled meats. That good food, I could taste everything and the best I really felt at home. Thanks Toni and Alexa

Sleep

The city of Santa Marta offers several small hotels and hostels where you will find rooms from 20,000 to 150,000 pesos per night.

In Taganga you will find many small backpackers hostels starting at 20,000 pesos per person and all offer all the comforts for both foreign and national tourists.

At the Rodadero it has been very typical for people to rent their apartment next to or near the beach. It is a typical holiday place for families and large groups, and renting an apartment is cheaper than hotels that are often expensive in this area.

RSMA Rodadero Santa Marta Apartments: Apartments with beautiful sea view, excellent location suitable for families and couples. Prices from $140,000. Air conditioning, WiFi, swimming pool, excellent 180 degree view of the bay and steps from the beach of El Rodadero Santa Marta. We offer airport shuttle services, local excursions and snorkeling. In high season, both Taganga and Rodadero are often crowded with tourists.

Bello Horizonte and Colored Wells are located between the city of Santa Marta and the airport and in this area you can rent cottages and houses next to the beach for days or weeks. This is a good choice for tourists who want to enjoy their privacy vacation and with all the comforts[4].

Within the Tayrona Park you will find only the luxurious echabs[5] and cottages, but there are also lodgings and Fincas outside the park that cost less.
